From the Desk of Judi!

This week's topic is:

BIOMES

Biomes are the various regions of our planet, such as a grassland or desert, characterized chiefly by the dominant forms of plant life and the prevailing climate.

Some sites to help in this effort:

  • NASA Earth Observatory Mission: Biomes
This fun, interactive website was designed by NASA's earth observatory to introduce students to the Earth's Biomes. Investigate biomes, then test your knowledge about the biomes by completing each mission.
    http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Laboratory/Biome/

  • Earth Floor - Biomes
A distinct ecological community of plants and animals living together in a particular climate is called a "biome." Scientists have divided the broad spectrum of climates and ecological communities found on Earth into biomes in different ways - some with many divisions, some with only a few...

  • Biomes of the World
What is the importance of understanding the interdependent roles of plants, animals, the physical landscape and the influence of humans on the biomes of the world? How can you come to understand how the balance of each biome affects our global ecosystem? Can you think critically about global issues?

  • Biome Discovery Expedition: Grades: 3-5, 6-8
Students use the Internet to discover similarities and differences among biomes. As zoo planners, students depart on an expedition and share experiences in many ways; they return with a decision on which biome the city zoo should construct as well as which plants and animals to include in it.

Ask Judi!

This week features the reopening of The Museum of Modern Art:

The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA)
http://www.moma.org
Founded in 1929 as an educational institution, the Museum of Modern Art seeks to create a dialogue between the established and the experimental, the past and the present, in an environment that is responsive to the issues of modern and contemporary art, while being accessible to a public that ranges from scholars to young children. The recently completed building project represents MoMA’s most extensive redefinition since its founding seventy-five years ago.

Recently, the Department of Education, with MoMA's Digital Media department, has also developed a pair of innovative Web sites designed for young children and teenagers, respectively:

Destination: Modern Art at http://www.moma.org/destination designed especially for children ages five to eight, features a visitor from outer space who is sent to Earth on a mission to explore modern art.

Red Studio at http://www.moma.org/redstudio developed by MoMA in collaboration with high school students, explores issues and questions raised by teens about modern art and today's working artists.

Enjoy!

Each week, I'll use this area to answer your questions, post announcements, and provide interesting input! So please email me at EduHoundWeekly@eduhound.com and watch for your answer here!
