This week's topic is:

LIBRARIES ONLINE

Along with the resources featured this week, try locating and visiting your local area libraries.

You can browse their catalogs for exactly what you need and in most cases reserve a book, journal, video, etc. using your library card. It's a great time saver!

  • Internet Public Library
The Internet Public Library (IPL), is a public service organization and learning/teaching environment at the University of Michigan School of Information.

This week features an exciting new Science Web site:

Whyville
http://www.whyville.net

Whyville.net is a free virtual community that engages tweens in learning about science, economics, and citizenship. Whyvillians create their own virtual faces (avatars) and receive a salary of "clams" based upon their participation on the site. With the clams they earn, they purchase "face parts" for their avatar, which are designed and sold to them by other Whyvillians and design, build, and decorate virtual homes. Site includes multiplayer games, and educational activities with sponsorships from organizations such as NASA.

Coming Soon, the opening of the Whyville "mall" and food court.  This coincides with the launch of a major new health and nutrition activity (supervised by nutrition professionals with the University of Texas).  Whyvillians will be responsible for eating properly on the site using virtual food.

For a virtual tour go to  http://www.whyville.net/lounge/tour/WWR.html
