From the Desk of Judi!

This week's topic is:

ENDANGERED SPECIES

Upon signing the Endangered Species Act (ESA) on December 28, 1973, (which replaced the Endangered Species Conservation Act of 1969) President Nixon stated "Nothing is more priceless and more worthy of preservation than the rich array of animal life with which our country has been blessed."

Some sites to help in this effort:

  • The 2004 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species
IUCN - The World Conservation Union, through its Species Survival Commission (SSC) has for four decades been assessing the conservation status of species, subspecies, varieties and even selected subpopulations on a global scale in order to highlight taxa threatened with extinction, and therefore promote their conservation.

  • US Fish and Wildlife Service Endangered Species Program
The Fish and Wildlife Service, in the Department of the Interior, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries, in the Department of Commerce, share responsibility for administration of the Endangered Species Act. Learn more about what the Fish and Wildlife Service does to carry out this responsibility.
    http://endangered.fws.gov/

  • The NMFS Office of Protected Resources (OPR)
OPR develops, implements, and administers programs for the protection, conservation, and recovery of species protected under the ESA.  The Office also develops and implements policies, procedures, and regulations for permits to take listed species according to the ESA.

  • ES2000 - Endangered Species of the Next Millennium
This ThinkQuest site will teach you, in English and Dutch, what animals are endangered, the causes of extinction, and what you can do to help! There are also videos, pictures and sounds.

This week features a site with a cause:

One Warm Coat
http://www.onewarmcoat.com
It's cold outside. You grab your coat and head out the door -- a simple act that we all take for granted. But for many Americans, there is no coat to protect against the ravages of winter. One Warm Coat has set out to provide a coat, free, for anyone in need of a little warmth. Volunteers throughout the country collect the coats and distribute them directly to needy men, women, and children.

This nonprofit organization provides all the materials necessary for local groups to start their own collection and distribution event, including a guide, publicity materials, and sample posters. If you've cleaned out your closet and are looking for a worthwhile recipient for last season's jackets, check out the donation locations in your state. One Warm Coat makes it easy for you to make your own contribution -- whether it's a full-blown collection effort or just an outgrown parka.

Join the Cause!

Each week, I'll use this area to answer your questions, post announcements, and provide interesting input! So please email me at EduHoundWeekly@eduhound.com and watch for your answer here!
