From the Desk of Judi!

This week's topic is:

ANIMALS

"I think I could turn and live with animals,
they are so placid and self-contained,
I stand and look at them long and long."
~ Walt Whitman

EduHound Spotlight Site of the Week!

In honor of Animals, this week's featured site is:

The Animal Diversity Web @ The Univ. of Michigan Museum of Zoology
http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/index.html

An online database of animal natural history, distribution, classification, and conservation biology at the University of Michigan.

Including:

  • Thousands of species accounts about individual animal species. These may include text, pictures of living animals, photographs and movies of specimens, and/or recordings of sounds. Students write the text of these accounts and we cannot guarantee their accuracy.
  • Descriptions of levels of organization above the species level, especially phyla, classes, and in some cases, orders and families. Hundreds of hyperlinked pages and images illustrate the traits and general biology of these groups. Professional biologists prepare this part.

Enjoy!

Ask Judi!

This week brings an announcement:

DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY AND FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM ANNOUNCE DATE OF ISSUE FOR SERIES-2004 $20 NOTE
Safer, Smarter, More Secure $20 Note To Begin Circulating October 9, 2003

The first newly redesigned Series-2004 $20 notes, featuring background colors and improved security features, will be issued October 9, the U.S. government announced today. On the day of issue, the Federal Reserve System will begin distributing the new notes to the public through the nation’s commercial banks.

As a public education campaign, we want to ensure that as many Americans as possible are aware of the new $20 bill before it goes into circulation. In particular, the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing would like to reach kids so that they understand that the new $20 bill is real -- not "play" or fake money.

To reach children effectively, the U.S. government is offering free educational materials to teachers, including an interactive CD-ROM, an activity poster and daily/weekly lesson plans. All materials meet national education standards, and they can be ordered online.
