From the Desk of Judi!

This week's topic is:

SPELLING

I'm sure you remember this one, "I before E except after C or when it sounds like an A
as in neighbor and weigh." And that doesn't even scratch the surface of the rules of spelling!

On a personal note: Along with my many wonderful teachers, I must thank my mom -- the former English teacher we affectionately refer to as, "The Red Pen" -- for teaching me the importance of correct spelling!

Some sites to help in this effort:

  • Spelling Hub
The Spelling Hub is an innovative online interactive spelling program for elementary and middle school students in grades 5-8. (Many free programs, as well as a subscription option.)
    http://spellinghub.com/spelling/spelling.cfm

  • edHelper.com: Spelling Worksheets
Just type in your list of words and edHelper will do the rest! Spelling, Vocabulary, Word Searches, and many other worksheets are all automatically generated. Or use a preformatted sheet, by grade level.

  • Funbrain.com: Spelling
The computer will give twenty sets of four words. Place a check next to the word which is spelled wrong. Spell the word you checked correctly in the box.

  • Scott Foresman Everyday Spelling
A wide selection of spelling activities, worksheets, quizzes, puzzles, and more for grades 1-8.

Ask Judi!

This week I have an exciting announcement from The Smithsonian Institution:

The Smithsonian Institution announces the launch of SmithsonianEducation.org, an exciting new Web site for educators, families, and students. Featuring content from 16 Smithsonian museums, the National Zoo, and the Smithsonian's world-class research centers, SmithsonianEducation.org brings the Smithsonian's vast educational resources to millions of classrooms and homes across the nation.

SmithsonianEducation.org features include:

* Separate areas designed for educators, families, and students

* Nearly 1,000 educational resources, searchable by grade, subject, and museum

* Interactive activities that engage students through rich graphics and animation

* Lessons, activities, and teaching tools aligned with national education standards.

SmithsonianEducation.org features three sections:

1. EDUCATORS: Free resources for the classroom!

Content is aligned with national education standards, developed with input from teachers, and based on Smithsonian scholarship. Educators can quickly download lesson plans or search by subject or grade level for nearly 1,000 publications, Web sites, field trips, and other teaching tools. The site also lists professional development opportunities, special events for teachers, and a step-by-step guide to planning field trips to the Smithsonian and other museums.

2. FAMILIES: Museums are great family spaces!

Families can learn how to make the most of their museum visits by planning ahead and following tips and activities provided by the Smithsonian's education experts. The family site helps parents find child-friendly exhibitions at the Smithsonian and its Affiliates across the nation. The site also features reading lists, interactive learning labs, and other online activities that help parents to encourage learning.

3. STUDENTS: A fun and interactive destination for kids!

Bright, friendly, and easy-to-navigate, the site features sound, video, collection photos, and maps to engage today's media-oriented students. Through the site's interactive features such as the award-winning Apollo 11, students can take a virtual journey back in time to explore historical events. Secrets of the Smithsonian engages students with its behind-the-scenes stories of the Smithsonian Institution's rich history-from the curse of the Hope Diamond to the location of Smithson's bones. And Smithsonian Kids: Collecting highlights Smithsonian collections and inspires students to try their own hands at collecting. Students can also browse through dozens of Smithsonian Web sites, ranging from art and design, to science and nature, to history and faraway places.

Enjoy!

Each week, I'll use this area to answer your questions, post announcements, and provide interesting input! So please email me at EduHoundWeekly@eduhound.com and watch for your answer here!
