JULY 4TH
|
Independence Day, observed on July 4, commemorates the birthday of the United States. As the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, it is a major American holiday and an important time for celebration. |
Some sites to help in this effort:
- Smithsonian Institution/National Museum of American History -- The Star-Spangled Banner
The flag that inspired our national anthem. In 1998 we launched a significant effort to preserve this icon, which has been endangered by time and exposure to pollution and the elements. In this Web site, you can discover the history of the Star-Spangled Banner, consider the flag's symbolism, learn about the conservation process, and explore our educational offerings.

- Declaration of Independence (Rough Draft) -- American Treasures of the Library of Congress
The "original Rough draught" of the Declaration of Independence, one of the great milestones in American history, shows the evolution of the text from the initial "fair copy" draft by Thomas Jefferson to the final text adopted by Congress on the morning of July 4, 1776.
