SPRING

This year, the Vernal Equinox occurs on March 20th.

Some sites to help in this effort:

  • Spring Equinox Lessons @ Georgia Dept. of Ed.
Includes lessons about the seasons and the motion of the earth around the sun and discussions of the changes that occur with the equinox. Students also explore the astronomy vocabulary specific to each topic.

  • Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, United Kingdom
The eminence of Kew today is thanks to a succession of avid collectors, visionary scientists, inspired landscape architects and redoubtable gardeners who, over the centuries, have grown and developed the gardens, and the collections they contain.

EduHound Spotlight Site of the Week!

In honor of Spring, this week's featured site is:

Journey North Spring 2004
http://www.learner.org/jnorth/spring2004/

Help track spring's journey across the Northern Hemisphere! Journey North engages students in a global study of wildlife migration and seasonal change. K-12 students share their own field observations with classmates across North America. They track the coming of spring through the migration patterns of monarch butterflies, bald eagles, robins, hummingbirds, mantees, whooping cranes--and other birds and mammals, the budding of plants, changing sunlight and other natural events.

Good Luck!

Ask Judi!

This week's question comes from Jennifer:

"I'm needing information about creating lesson plans for first graders about the planets."

Certainly, Jennifer

Our solar system consists of one star (the Sun), nine planets and all their moons, several thousand minor planets called asteroids or planetoids, and an equally large number of comets.

The Sun's age was calculated in 1989 to be 4.49 billion years old, less than the 4.7 billion years previously believed.

Here are some sites to get you started:

  • StarChild: A Learning Center for Young Astronomers (K-4)
This Internet site, contains general astronomy and space exploration information for children young children. Activities, most of which are interactive, are included.
    http://starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/StarChild/StarChild.html

  • Our Solar System: The Planets and Their Motion (K-4)
Take a further look at the planets by clicking on the pictures. A planet's year is the time it takes to revolve around the Sun. A planet's day is the time it takes to rotate about its own axis...
    http://vathena.arc.nasa.gov/curric/space/planets/index.html

  • Learning Planet Sizes (K-2)
In this activity, learners use the concepts of greater than, less than, and equal to, in order to classify student height, object size, and planet size.
    http://btc.montana.edu/ceres/html/planetsizes.html

  • The NASA Space Science Curriculum Standards Quilt (K-12)
Provides fast access to lesson plans aligned with the National Science Education Standards.

Good Luck!
