From the Desk of Judi!

This week's topic is:

ALL THINGS IRISH

May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

--An Irish Blessing

Some sites to help in this effort:

  • Ancient Ireland
Serves as both an archive and as a teaching vehicle for the dissemination of accurate history of Ireland, the Irish and our Celtic heritage. Study significant events from the time of the Ancient World of the Celts, up through the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance.

  • In Search of Ancient Ireland
While you are building your students' knowledge of ancient Ireland, you will also be building their technology skills, as each lesson contains structured and integrated use of the Internet. Feel free to adapt the lesson plans to meet your students' needs and your curricular goals.

EduHound Spotlight Site of the Week!

In honor of All Things Irish, this week's featured site is:

The History of St Patrick's Day
http://www.historychannel.com/exhibits/stpatricksday/main.html

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17, his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for thousands of years. On St. Patrick's Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon.

Enjoy!

This week features an announcement from The US Department of Education:

New Web Site Will Help Communities Develop Character Education Programs

The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools unveiled its new Web site for the Character Education and Civic Engagement Technical Assistance Center (CETAC), or CETAC Online. CETAC provides state program administrators, local educators and the public with information on character education and civic engagement, as well as strategies that support academic goals and other reform efforts. This center will also provide support and information for and about schools involved in character education and civic engagement across the country.

CETAC's objective is to provide technical assistance for implementing effective character education and civic engagement to the U.S. Department of Education's Partnerships in Character Education Program grantees and to serve as a resource for grantees, educators, parents and the community at large. CETAC also contains publicly accessible information on legislative changes and news and events, as well as publications on character education and links to resources of interest to the field.

For more information, please visit the Character Education and Civic Engagement Technical Assistance Center (CETAC) at http://www.cetac.org
