WELCOME to the 167th Issue of EduHound Weekly!

EduHound Weekly Archives at: http://www.eduhound.com/eduhoundweeklyarchives.cfm

From the Desk of Judi!

This week's topic is:

ARCTIC LIFE

It has been called the "Last Great Race on Earth" and it has won worldwide acclaim and interest. From Anchorage, in south central Alaska, to Nome on the western Bering Sea coast, each team of 12 to 16 dogs and their musher cover over 1150 miles in 10 to 17 days.

Follow the race beginning March 6, 2004 at http://www.iditarod.com

Some sites to help in this effort:

  • The Arctic Studies Center @ The National Museum of Natural History
Explore the history of northern peoples, cultures, and environments and the issues that matter to northern residents today. Join us as we excavate arctic sites; support indigenous efforts to preserve cultural heritage; and work with communities and scholars to share the treasures preserved in museum collections and archives.

  • PolarHusky.com
Join Arctic Transect 2004! Setting out to document arctic climate change we will dogsled the territory of Nunavut, meeting Inuit Elders and students, to explore traditional ecological knowledge in the remote communities visited along the trail while gathering scientific data daily from the field for NASA and Environment Canada. Students will gain proficiency in core disciplines while interacting with fellow students, researchers and explorers in the field.

  • PBS The Living Edens: Arctic Oasis
Few climates could be so unforgiving. And few so challenging for man. Though it may seem as if only polar bears and walruses inhabit the Canadian Arctic territory of Nunavut, about 27,000 Inuit people also call this region home. Caribou supply fur for their coats, seals energy-rich meat for their food. Yet, ultimately, all human actions in this remote land must bend to the Arctic's will.

  • Polar Continental Shelf Project
Learn about the Arctic by visiting the Animals, Plants, Humans, Geography and Photo Gallery sections, and then see if you can complete the Quiz.

  • Antartica.org
Features information on the poles and the polar regions through research, adventure & expeditions.

Ask Judi!

This week's question comes from Valerie:

"I'm planning a lesson on the Sun. Could you please feature some sites I can share with my students?"

Certainly, Valerie

Here are some sites to get you started:

  • A Sunrise, Sunset: Quickly Go the Days
Take advantage of the Iditarod for teaching about the position of the sun in the sky. In this lesson, students plot on a map the hours of daylight in different cities/locations around the country or the world.
    http://www.education-world.com/a_lesson/03/lp300-02.shtml
  • Here Comes the Sun!
This is a self-guided tutorial on the sun and its effects on the environment here on Earth. Through this tutorial, you will be able to see the sun in, if you'll pardon the pun, a different light.
    http://vortex.plymouth.edu/sun.html

  • NOAA Solar Calculators
Did you know that when you see the sun rise or set, it is actually below the local horizon? This is because sunlight bends or refracts as it enters the earth's atmosphere.
    http://www.srrb.noaa.gov/highlights/sunrise/CONT.html

  • Project FIRST: Our Star the Sun
The source of heat and light, the Sun is a great topic for investigation in your classroom.
    http://www.eyeonthesky.org/ourstarsun.html

Enjoy!

Each week, I'll use this area to answer your questions, post announcements, and provide interesting input! So please email me at EduHoundWeekly@eduhound.com and watch for your answer here!
