Ask Judi!

This week's question comes from Robert:

"I'm starting a unit on the California Gold Rush this month with my middle school students. Could you please provide a few resources that I can share with my students?"

Certainly, Robert

On January 24, 1848 James Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill, touching off the California gold rush. The discovery was an epoch-making event. News of the discovery attracted to California hundreds of thousands of gold-seekers from across the country and around the world. Their coming transformed not only the economic history of California, but much of its social, cultural and political history as well.

Here are some sites to get you started:

  • PBS Online: The Gold Rush
This site is your comprehensive guide to the epic quest for gold, including activity ideas, test questions, related links, and more.
    http://www.pbs.org/goldrush/

  • The Gold Rush
Whether you home school, teach elementary school, or just enjoy history, The Gold Rush is designed for you.

  • Gold Rush! California's Untold Stories @ Oakland Museum of CA
This 1998 site, and the museum exhibition it previews, commemorate the 150th anniversary of the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill on January 24, 1848, and the frenzied rush to California of gold seekers from around the world.

  • California Gold Rush Sesquicentennial
A gateway to gold, the journey by land & sea, foothills abound in history, timeline and more.
