THE FIVE SENSES

Anything we see, hear, feel, smell, or taste requires billions of nerve cells to flash urgent messages along cross-linked pathways and feedback loops in our brains, performing intricate calculations that scientists have only begun to decipher.

Some sites to help in this effort:
  • The Incredible Human Body: The Five Senses
Students learn how each of the five senses works; compare and contrast the means by which the senses gather information about the world; and investigate a research question, analyze the results and present the findings.
    http://school.discovery.com/lessonplans/programs/humanbody/

  • SEDL: Five Senses Unit
In this unit the teacher background information is quite lengthy and has been placed within each lesson. The teacher will have easier access to the information if it is closer to the other instructional material of the unit.

  • Education World: My Five Senses: WebQuest for Elementary Students
The students in your class will work in groups to learn about the five senses. Each group will report on what it finds and the class will vote on which sense is most important sense. Then each student will make a book about all five senses.

  • The Sense of Smell Institute
Helping students, teachers and all visitors to our website to explore the sense of smell by providing links to science education resources and curriculum ideas and other informative websites.

Good Luck!

In honor of The Five Senses, this week's featured site is:

Seeing, Hearing, and Smelling the World
http://www.hhmi.org/senses
Scientific information about how the senses carry messages to the brain and how the brain interprets and relays those messages is clear and very readable. Separate sections include discussions of current research on such topics as deafness and colorblindness, as well as explanations of how humans process -- and use -- data received through the senses.

Good Luck!
